And marches alone can’t bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Like the Barry McGuire anthem Eve of Destruction riots against immigrants in South Africa have taken a turn for the worst with over 25 people killed and the army sent in to quell the violence. Apparently the attacks have included Necklacing, a brutal form of militia justice with roots in the ANC/IFP clashes of the 80's, in which a tire filled with fuel is forced over the head of the victim and set alight.

The picture above is of a man who was set on fire by rioters. He died later in the hospital.

Growing up as I have, in a peaceful, rich, and democratic country I have a hard time understanding how this comes about. Still, if the income disparity between migrants and nationals were lower, or the competition for jobs fiercer, I can see violence erupting in the US over immigration. Anyone who has spent any time with conservatives in the Southwest has likely heard some pretty appallingly xenophobic comments. Still, to have the rule of law completely break down as it has in South Africa is scary and appalling.

Lets hope that this can be brought under control quickly with a resolution that will keep it from happening again. I wish this sort of news were more readily available in the US, but inside our media bubble today is the first day I have noticed it on the front pages. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it and todays world news is tomorrows history we run teh risk of ignoring.
